{team}

(Waldport Pirates circa 1986... I am the one in the middle with my mouth open...#34)

Last night was the final tryout for the boys and girls basketball teams at our school.

I didn't think much of it... until the last 5 minutes when I realized that most of these wonderful girls I was connecting with would not be on the team. :(

I am still sad thinking of it this morning.
I didn't sleep much last night.

In case you didn't know 24 boys tried out...
and 32 girls... 32!!!
(btw-how awesome is it that that many kids tried out!!!!)
Each team will carry 10 people...
that means that 36 people did not make the "team"

*****(at this point I must put my plug in...)
Phil Knight... if you are reading this please donate the $$$$ we need to build our new facility so that ALL these wonderful kids can be on the team... because with our new facility we could run 2 teams for each... a varsity and jv... and no one would be cut... thanks Phil.*****

For the last 16 years my hubby has been doing this...
Giving some kids a chance...
and breaking others dream (for the year anyway)
coaching, encouraging, teaching, directing...

I don't envy him at all...
and now I am thinking "can I handle this?"

But back to [team]
in life we are all on a team...
a family team, a church team, school team, work team... etc. etc. etc.
(I am hoping NOT the team hitched to the wagon...)

As a kid I always made the team. I didn't know what it was like to not make the team.
Last night I felt it... kids I adore not on the team. :(
What I will say to them is this...
Keep trying, if you really want this don't give up...
practice hard, try hard, work hard...
Come out again next year.

Last night made me think...
"What kind of a team player am I? Do I give 100% all the time? Do I uplift and encourage? Do I have skill in my area? Do I contribute to the team or suck from the team? Am I positive even when the going gets tough? Or do I put my teammates down?"

Honestly, it depends on the day.
I am embarrassed to say that sometimes I am not a team player...
sometimes I don't give my all,
sometimes I am negative...

Thankfully my Heavenly Father gives us a second chance... and I can practice hard and give my best the next time... and best of all I can ask forgiveness, learn from my mistakes and move on.
