Friday morning before running out the door there were 4 chickens outside of the coop...
This was not the first time.
It is official, the chicks can fly and they know it.
When Josh walked in the door Friday afternoon one of the first things I said to him was
"We have been chasing chickens... you need to clip their wings."
So fast forward to this afternoon.
Each one of the kids had a friend over (even Jack!) and it was time for a little "how-to" on clipping chickens wings.
We had Mariah & Emma help out.

first get your "muck" boots on.
this is an important step when walking in chicken poop.

it is preferable to wear long sleeves as the chickens like to scratch... Josh has a nice scar to prove it.
it is also nice to have a strong man to hold the chicken for you so the clipping is easier to do.

extend wing of chicken and then clip the wing... on one side only. This puts the bird off balance when they are trying to fly out of the coop.

Mariah giving it a go... she was a little apprehensive at first, but she did it!

right about the time we (they) were done with the clipping.... and right after this particular bird in question squirted poop all over Josh's leg... (true story) (and right before Josh asked Mariah if she would smell his shirt to see if it was indeed poop!)
Duane told Josh what he used to do to the chickens he had as a boy...
Pretty much he would tuck their head under a wing, spin them, lay them down... and they would be so disoriented that they would lay almost dead like for a few moments... and then they get up and run off.

Now... 28 chickens who will fly lopsided.
Feel free to stop by if you want to see some crazy looking birds.
